In Java, Satu Suro is New Year's Day.
The night before is spent in meditation and prayer - weighing up what has happened in the past year and making plans for the new. One strongly held superstition is that it's bad luck to leave the home - so not much in the way of New Year's Eve parties. This is linked to the superstition is that Sengkolo, an evil spirit, is looking for victims on this night - victims she can possess to spread her evil.
Meanwhile, Ibrahim has lost his faith. He gives up his job as a body washer in the local funeral parlour and drifts. When nobody else will leave their home on Satu Suro, he is called upon to wash the remains of a family in a local mansion house who have died in mysterious circumstances. Ibrahim takes on the job and sets off from home.....
