I usually come at things more as a science fiction fan than horror per se (thanks for indulging me all these years, CHFB!)
However, I suppose that there's nothing more horrific than the world being overrun by artificial humans. I've been intrigued with R.U.R. ever since I wrote an article in Van Helsing's Jounal back in '06. I suppose also that this great new forum is as good a place to announce that I'll be working on a full book on the topic to be published hopefully at the end of 2025. The goal is to comprehensively cover the performances (merely planned and realized) on stage, screen, radio and television up to roughly 1950.
I was truly amazed at many things when I seriously started digging into research (and I'm kind of hoping that readers will be also):
- the sheer world-wide spread of the play (6 continents, at least 30 countries)
- the firsts in T.V. and Radio to which R.U.R. can lay claim
- the story (stories) on how it was (and almost was) made into film
- the absolutely amazing number of recognizable personalities that were (or were planned to be) in some performance in some media or the other.
