Ambitious plans from booming Russian studio Soyuzmultfilm to create a universe based on the stars of Russian literature - much like Alan Moore's League of Extraordinary Gentlemen, I guess.
"We have created a single world based on the entire existing fantasy-adventure base. These heroes remain in our cultural field thanks to the school curriculum and classic film adaptations," said head honcho Sergei Lukyanenko.
The universe will include Engineer Garin, based on sci-fi writer Aleksey Tolstoy's The Death Ray of Engineer Garin (1927), filmed as The Hyperboloid of Engineer Garin (1965). You can see it on YouTube. Garin will be the bad guy ably-assisted by his ..ummm... right-hand man, Lefty. The heroes will include Aelita, Queen of Mars, from another Tolstoy book of the same name (1923) - filmed in 1924; and Ichthyander, from Beliaev's Amphibian Man (1928), famously filmed in 1962, breaking all Soviet box office records. Other members of the team will be decided later - applications currently being considered!
"Our task is to carefully transfer the classic heroes into modern times, preserving their key features. For example, Aelita will remain smart and noble, and Ichthyander will continue to protect the sea world," said Lukyanenko.
