Last May, he was evicted from his Philadelphia store location because he was having trouble paying the rent due to the loss of business from Covid and Amazon. Later, he posted that his New Jersey store was temporarily closed because he had Covid. When it never reopened, and bearing in mind that he was 72, I knew what was going to happen next. Very recently, it did.
He was a very nice man. Back in the worst financial year of my life, 2001, he bought a lot of books from me that I'm sure he really had no particular use for, but he purchased them anyway, just to help me out. I must have been in his store a couple thousand times since 1976. At one point, when a young lady I was rather close to worked there, I went four times a week. Even after that relationship ended, I still went there at least once a week, every week, for decades. He said that he was going to find a new Philadelphia location, and I was very much hoping that he would. But now it's all over.
