A very corpulent man himself, when he did an interview with Fred Silverman, he called him something like, "The Man with the Golden Gut." An outraged Silverman sputtered, "That guy came in here and he must weigh 300 pounds!" At that point, Silverman stopped returning Shales's phone calls.
A doctor show that Shales ripped apart, whichever one it might have been, fought back by doing a show featuring an incontinent patient... named Tom Shales!
