Folks: The Classic Horror Film Board has for almost 30 years been built on substantial discussions about films old and new, about our shared memories, and about healthy -- and respectful -- debate.
At its best, the CHFB can be stimulating, fun, and has become a destination website for those trying to be among those with shared enthusiasms.
No one needs to be an expert, but they do need to be mindful that this is a community, not a ratatatat chat room.
Posts that simply say things like "I'm with you on that!" or "I'd like to see that film" or such are human and engaging, but they also can become background noise.
Especially for some of our members, who still have slow and older Internet connections, it can take 30-40 seconds, sometimes more than a minute, to call up a post and if it only says, "Too funny!" well, is that time well spent for anyone?
There are some members who view the CHFB as an open public utility, making dozens of posts a day, many insubstantial asides just filling the time. It is not that. It is a community. We are soon to welcome our 12,000th member!
A chatroom environment is the opposite; rarely is there time for a meaty chat post; it is bang bang bang, jokey, quick, fun. (And nothing against Chatrooms; we partner with several here at the CHFB).
We do NOT want to set a limit on the number of daily posts at the CHFB; even worse, we do not want to approve posts before they can be seen (what a nightmare that would be).
Not everyone even will agree this is a problem. But enough people do.
Please take an extra moment to decide whether a post is worth everyone's time, whether it adds to the discussion, and is just not, as closed-captioning sometimes says, "indistinct chattering."
The CHFB is for sure fun and breezy, but it needs to be a bit more particular about what is a quick post compared to a random thought better left untyped. I know I am guilty of that. We all are.
Thanks for listening. Your reaction is welcome. Even short ones.
