'80s, '90s Horror & Sci-Fi • RIKI-OH: THE STORY OF RICKY (aka LIK WONG) (1991)

It is the near future.  All public services have been privatized, and prisons have become brutal hellholes run by powerful gangs in cahoots with corrupt prison guards and officials.  At one such prison arrives a mysterious machoman, Ricky Ho, who has several bullets in his chest and refuses to provide any information not already listed in his records.  More importantly, he is a master of a style of qigong that basically makes you totally invincible and gives you the power to punch people into pools of steaming, twitching gore.  Now it's time for Ricky to take the prison down one boss at a time, from the inside!

This movie is something else.  It's extremely sappy at times, very campy at others, and unbelievably gory all the time.  It's also got a fun (intentional) sense of humor to it.  All of this comes together so that you end up chuckling at the extreme gore as though it's just another gag.  Although it's a martial arts film, the fights are really not impressive, and mostly consist of a guy punching Ricky a couple times, and then Ricky getting pissed off and punching the guy's arms/face/leg/guts/whatever off.  It doesn't matter, though, because the movie is endlessly entertaining.

I originally had this on VHS, and then imported the UK DVD back in the heyday of DVD.  I most recently watched the movie on the wonderful 88 Films Blu-ray, and the movie has never looked better!  You can choose from several audio tracks, including the original Cantonese mono (both the theatrical and home video mixes!), English dub (mono or 5.1), and four (!) audio commentaries.  I personally recommend the English dub, as it's the perfect match for such a campy movie.
