This low-budget Turkish movie has picked up awards in festivals as far apart as Phoenix and London.
Set 100 years in the future, society has collapsed and the remnants of the population live in closed bunkers underground. Under the Scarcity laws, if a new person is born, an older person must die - this causes problems for one family living in close quarters in a bunker - who is going to be sacrificed for the greater good? The movie is set for general release this week and will hit streaming services shortly.
Selen Ozturk is a remarkable actress. She recently featured in Colour of Victory / Zaferin Rengi (2024) which tells the strange story of the role played by the Turkish football team Fenerbahce in resisting the British occupation at the end of World War I. Briefly, the club was hiding weapons and providing them to resistance fighters from their clubhouse. To add insult to injury, the club agree to play the British Army at soccer for the Harington Cup, named after General Harington, commander of the occupying forces. The British team expected to win easily - after all, football was our game - but to make sure, they imported professional players from England to take on the Turkish amateurs. In a dramatic game at the Taksim Stadium, Fenerbahce won 2-1 to lift the trophy.
Turkey gained independence weeks later.
