The sleepy Devon port of Barnstaple is best known for Tarka the Otter, the long bridge across the Taw, the reclusive nature of its inhabitants and for being the birthplace of Sir Francis Chichester, first man to sail single-handed around the world (the lengths some people will go to in order to escape the town). Pretty soon, it may be best known for an invasion of Dracula and his deadly minions.
Independent movie Dracula: Rise of the Vampire is due for two weeks filming from the end of June 2024. “Don't be alarmed if you see a wild group of vampires running towards you," director Dean Meadows warns the inhabitants. "Wear some garlic just in case, and do what you normally do: walk in the opposite direction.”
Don't knock independent movies - they are an important stepping stone or lifeline for many in the profession. This new version of Dracula may even surprise you. “When a satanic cult hellbent on raising the legendary Count Dracula commits a bloodthirsty massacre in a London church, former disgraced detective Gabriel Lee must return to the field alongside his ex-partner to battle the undead and prevent a vampire apocalypse. Little does he know that the legendary Count and his faithful minions are not the only ones out for blood.”
Well, there's the Blood Transfusion Service, I guess.....
Stacey Cane runs the Profoundly Alice fancy dress shop in Barnstaple. She persuaded Dean to film in her home town. "It's nice down in Devon; there's lovely scenery,” said Dean. "We will be using several locations, including Grumpy’s Café in Joy Street, part of the High Street, Theatre Lane, St Anne's Chapel, and Broomhill Sculpture Gardens,” Stacey added.
I don't know about you but to me this looks destined to be the surprise hit of Halloween this year.
