I've been listening to the first season of the Art of Crime podcast, and they devoted an entire episode to Richard Mansfield, whose creation of the quick change onstage of Jekyll into Hyde causes such a sensation at the time that his name was brought up as a possibly Jack the Ripper. One thing that seems sure is that this play (rather like the Dracula play) has really wagged the dog in terms of changing how people in general see Jekyl and Hyde.
The podcast (you can listen or just read the text) with a good amount of photos:

There is some discussion of how he pulled off the transformation on stage!
