The day has suddenly become long and dark for American director Julio Hernandez Cordon as his Mexican/Colombian made film has been withdrawn from a showing at the Malaga Film Festival in response to a 'me-too' complaint to the organisers - though the film was promoted at this year's Berlinale. An ex-partner of Cordon lives near Malaga.
“[The film was withdrawn] in order to avoid situations that may endanger the vulnerability of the affected individuals and in line with the strong commitment of this Festival against any form of violence against women and in favour of full equality of rights," said the organisers.
Although the Festival received one complaint, four complaints were posted on a Mexican film professional website alleging emotional and physical abuse and the knowing transmission of an STD. Cordon, who has admitted the offence and claims to have worked hard to resolve the issues, said, “It is perplexing that the festival would make a decision that, while supposedly preventive, seems to inflict collective punishment on an entire team." He said he had no plans to visit Spain for the Festival.
Oddly, the film is about a vampire movie director who travels from Festival to Festival seeking the blood they crave. The anaemic film is enriched by the performance of Carla Nieto. She was in Hypnotised about a group of people stuck in an altered state after their hypnotist dies from a cardiac arrest and is soon to appear in the much-anticipated Belle De Jour Remake.
