Classic Horror on Blu-Ray and DVD • What was your first movie purchase?

With the recent threat of the demise of physical media, I got to thinking about my collection and my mind wandered back to when it all began.

Technically, my first film was the 200 ft silent Creature From The Black Lagoon by Castle Films. Boy was I proud.

The next step up was an 8mm silent bootleg copy of the full length King Kong. Boy was I proud.

But my first real video movie purchase was Superman on VHS. I paid $100 for it on sale at a local appliance store during their Mother's Day sale. It was panned and scanned, two channel stereo, edited and sped up to fit the run time of the tape. Boy was I proud.

Then came Laserdisc, DVD,and now Blu-Ray and 4K. I now have a real 3D version of the Creature as well as a Blu-Ray copy of Superman that I paid under $10 for that looks and sounds better than what I saw in the theater.

There are people who complain and nitpick about some of today's transfers. Look back at those first efforts that thrilled us and were the first seeds of our collections - we've come a long way.

What was your first?
