I've been a fan of Judge Dee all my life - since reading the Robert Van Gulik novels as a schoolchild. He's the Sherlock Holmes of China, so to speak.
Most know the Judge Dee stories were based on a real person - Di Renjie - who was a judge during the Tang dynasty under Empress Wu who rules for forty years at the end of the seventh century.
The new series of forty episodes is available on all the usual video-sharing platforms from Youku. What's great about it is that it dramatises all of Van Gulik's novels (plus a few extra stories to aid continuity) whilst adding a dash of wuxia and fantasy elements. It's different from the three recent high-budget Detective Dee movies which were more fantasy-based - the TV series relies more on good old-fashioned detection. I enjoyed the movies as well - but more from a general fantasy point of view
By the way, the actress who plays Empress Wu is a knockout
