Over the last week, I've explored Indonesian horror movies. They consistently top the ratings in the archipelago - largely due to the young audience. A third of Indonesians are less than twenty years old - so the cinemas are packed with teens looking for thrills. First it was Japan, then Korea, Thailand and now Indonesia as the lead centre for Asian horror. The export potential has not been lost on the government keen to diversify from oil.
"We can export horror," said Andi Boediman, producer. "It sells, you know , this Indonesian horror. In fact, overseas we are known not for drama, but horror. Not comedy, but horror. "
In Rambut Kafan, debut actress Bulan Sutena stars as Tari a woman who took care of her sick mother for three years until one day she finds her dead. Tari is suspicious of a local corporation who was pushing her mother over an inheritance. Tari discovers the company employs a sinister woman (the amazing Virnie Ismail) who she suspects of being a black witch.
A battle ensues.....
