Top-selling Russian comic book Major Grom took a first step into the movies with a short film in 2017 in which the police major was a customer in a bank at the moment when it was raided. Despite being unarmed, the Major decides to stop them.
Major Grom is not really a superhero - like Batman or Judge Dredd, Igor relies on fists and brains rather than superpowers to defeat his enemies. The success of the short led to the first full-length feature in 2021 - Major Grom: Plague Doctor. The blurb goes like this: "Police Major Igor Grom is known throughout St Petersburg for his irreconcilable attitude towards criminals - but everything changes with the appearance of a person in the mask of the Plague Doctor. Having declared that his city is "sick with the plague of lawlessness", the Plague Doctor dispenses cures - killing people who, at one time, escaped punishment with the help of money and high status. People are confused - isn't this a good thing? Why is the heroic Major setting out to stop him?
The first Grom film was a massive hit and led to this year's Major Grom: A Difficult Childhood. Set twenty years earlier during the wild nineties (much like Chicago in the thirties), this shows Grom as a child watching his Dad work as a police officer. Grom-senior is hunting Anubis, the powerful local crime lord. One day, Grom-junior decided to tag along. A movie like this could have been a disaster but the critics agreed that somehow it was even better: "This was a blast - I loved the first movie, but this one exceeded all my expectations."
A third movie is already planned for release in May this year: Grom: The Game. Stand by for action!
