The receipts have caught some by surprise - Serf 2 has become the highest earner in Russian cinemas, knocking Avatar off the fourteen-year top spot.
The Truman-esque premise is straightforward but let's start with the first Serf movie from 2019. In that movie, Grisha is the son of an oligarch whose pampered lifestyle drives his father mad. That's when Papa comes up with an idea - he spends some of his money to create a medieval village and hire an army of actors to people it. Grisha is knocked out and when he awakens, he finds himself inside a small village threatened by a Mongol (Tatar) attack. Over a few weeks, Grisha learns to stop being a child and to start being a man.
The low-budget first movie was a big success and a bigger budget for the second movie has led to phenomenal success. The plot clearly strikes a chord with a public addicted to reality shows. In the second movie, it's Anastasiya (Mariya Mironova), a spoiled brat of a girl, who gets sent back to a Russian village by Grisha (now a TV executive) to face a Napoleonic onslaught. You may remember talented Mariya from the Nighwatch / Daywatch movies. The great action-filled script (full of twists and turns) with sight gags peppered throughout and personable acting make this fantasy-led movie a joy to watch
Will the lack of a Smartphone and constant access to TikTok destroy Tasha or will she grow up at last into a woman?
