Once upon a time in a land far away a series of three books were written by Jan Brzechwa in Poland (1946 to be precise). There was a western edition where the character was renamed Professor Inkblot.
They became instant bestsellers and a staple part of every Polish child's education for generations. In much the same way as the Harry Potter stories, they merge folk traditions with modern concepts of magic in a thrilling encounter between good and absolute evil. There was a two-part low-budget film in 1983 but it is only now that a full-on remake is available. On its release, it has topped the Polish charts and it's only a matter of time before it segues across the streaming services to thrill us all.
The story is set within the mysterious Academy run by Professor Klek, north of Chocolate Street, Fairylandia, where wizards are trained in the traditional skills of the magic arts. Bespectacled, befuddled, Ada Contrary arrives as a new student at the castle-like academy with her guide, a wise raven (starting to sound familiar?). Amongst her associates is a huge, barely human caretaker - and then the adventures begin:
