Around the time Shakespeare was tinkering with poetry that didn't rhyme and jokes that weren't funny, Xu Zhonglin was sitting in a shack on Mount Zhong (near Nanjing) writing arguably the greatest fantasy epic of all time - the Investiture of the Gods (Fengshen Yanyi) - Chinese culture has never been the same since. Along with The Water Margin and Journey to the West, Investiture of the Gods forms one of the three founding pillars of Chinese literature. (I would add to that the Celebrated Cases of Judge Dee but then I've always been a Dee fanboy)
Investiture combines historical facts - the fall of the Shang Dynasty and the rise of the Zhou Dynasty (around 1000BC) with elements of Chinese mythology. In effect, you have a mega-battle between Humans, Gods and Monsters.
The first episode blew away the Chinese box office last summer and last week it won the Golden Elm Award in Macau - justly so. The film is directed by cult Mongolian Wuershan - check out his earlier movies (The Butcher, the Chef & the Swordsman; Painted Skin: The Resurrection; and Mojin - the Lost Legend). This guy has the magic touch. Playing Mad King Zhou in Creation of the Gods is Taiwanese-American actor Kris Phillips.
