Portuguese horror cinema is overwhelmed by its bigger neighbour next door where the genre is embedded and refined to the level of a national emblem.
Even so, the new effort from Gabriel Abrantes stands proud in the genre, produced at a standard that would generate envy amongst even the Hollywood elite. Also, by filming predominantly in English, Gabriel has found it easier to approach a mass audience. Here's the plot: Edward, adopted as a child, searches for his biological family. He finds them in a magnificent gothic villa high in the mountains of Northern Portugal. Edward is excited at meeting his long-lost mother and twin brother - but when he arrives at their invitation, nothing is as it seems. Edward soon discovers there is a terrifying secret.
Having rippled through the film festivals, Amelia's Children is on release in Europe from the end of this month
