Beverly Warren, Bill Warren's widow, passed this sad news along:
Samuel Sherwin Guyer Obituary
Samuel Sherwin Guyer, 71, passed away on September 19 after a valiant fight to regain his former good health. He was born in Detroit, MI on June 6, 1953 and his family moved to Newark, NJ in 1959. Sam's family then moved to West Orange, NJ in 1963, and he graduated from West Orange Mountain High in 1971.
Sam got his first guitar from his Uncle Barney for his Bar Mitzvah, at which time he quickly found his heart and soul in music. Sam was greatly influenced by many British groups in his musical career, including The Who and Small Faces. He was a self-employed contractor/house painter to supplement his music career. He was also a horror film devotee and avid comic book collector. Sam's love of horror films was life-long and he even managed a passionate group of fans on Facebook. He loved nothing more than finding old photographs of his favorite horror film actors Boris Karloff, Lon Chaney, and Vincent Price.
Sam was a singer/songwriter who carved out an esteemed reputation in the NJ/NYC music scene since the mid-80s. He opened for many national acts and played in a number of prime venues, including The Bitter End, The R Bar, CBGB, The Mercury Lounge, Sullivan Hall, and many others. Sam led his band under the name The Sam Sherwin Band, which throughout his career, featured some of the tri-state area's finest musicians, including drummer Dena Tauriello, keyboardist Peter Vitalone, and bassist Donna Thompson. His most popular albums included Iodine Cocktails and Dirty Little Secrets. Many critics agreed that Sam Sherwin was an essential artist who played songs that were individual, unique, and from the heart. Detroit Live Magazine described Sam Sherwin's music with "an honesty that speaks from the heart with personal stories we can all relate to. This is indie-based American Rock at its finest." His good friend and publicist Eric Harabadian ensured that Sam's music was heard on radio stations across the country.
Sam is survived by his sister Hannah Guyer Edelman and his brother Sheldon (Cathy) Guyer. He is also survived by his nieces, nephews, grand-niece, and grand-nephews Justin (Ellen) Edelman, Ari (Patty) Edelman, Daniel Edelman, Samantha Edelman, Brian Edelman, Darren Edelman, and Eric Edelman. Sam also leaves behind a number of friends who always supported him throughout his life, including Lumi Michelle Rolley, Paul Smith, Scott Kevelson, Glen Fittin, Gordon Fittin, Kevin Kiley, Gary Raff, and Jay Seelig, to name a few.
