He started out working on Night Gallery and other NBC shows alongside two other talented young directors named Steven Spielberg and John Badham, where he and Badham distinguished themselves as the best and most innovative of the series's directors (no one knows what happened to that Spielberg guy). He then went on to direct an uneven succession of genre films: William Castle's Bug, Jaws 2 (he was recommended for the job by another Night Gallery alumnus, production designer Joe Alves), Somewhere in Time, Supergirl, Santa Claus: The Movie and the TV movie version of Murders in the Rue Morgue. Returning to episodic TV, ironically, resulted in some of his best work, with genre credits including the first Twilight Zone revival, Heroes, Fringe and Supernatural. He was also a wonderful, witty interview subject, as demonstrated by the extras on some of the Night Gallery DVD sets. Dead at 85, RIP.
