This was a jaw-dropper when I saw it in Mike Hankin's first volume on the life and works of Ray Harryhausen. Merian C. Cooper was an old fan of H. Rider Haggard, so it's possible he had seen this book cover art. Of course, the basis of the wall was already long in place, left over from DeMille's "King of Kings." But it was altered (no pun intended), with the adding of the gate/door and the sacrifiicial altar just outside it for "Kong," same arrangement as this image.
