In form actress Chen Xiaoyun is making her movie debut after a long career in TV productions. They include Novoland: Pearl Eclipse (2021). Novoland is an imaginary universe like a cross between Marvel and Game of Thrones, I guess, with multiple series and spin-offs. In this one, local villagers, under orders from a corrupt emperor, discover they can make soft-hearted mermaids cry by pretending to sacrifice their children. Mermaids' tears rapidly turn into pearls which the emperor then flogs at exorbitant prices. Needless to say, a hero steps forth (a young girl) to infiltrate the court. She persuades a courtier to take her on as a student. The girl plans to stop the abuse but along the way discovers she loves the courtier tasked with making the empire work.
