Silent Horror • Eduard von Winterstein in NOSFERATU

In printed and online sources it's sometimes mentioned that stage and film actor Eduard von Winterstein appears as an innkeeper in the sound version of Nosferatu, released in Germany as Die zwölfte Stunde in 1931. The problem is he's not seen in any of the additional scenes in this re-edited version.

Recently I came across this claim again, which made me wonder – is the scene in question really just the inn scene in the original Nosferatu, where Hutter eats and spends the night? This scene also appears in the sound version.

The innkeeper is played by two different people: in the exterior scene where he greets Hutter, shot on location in Slovakia, he's played by an unidentified Slovak extra.

In the interior scenes, shot in the studio in Berlin, he's played by an uncredited actor who has for a long time been claimed to be Guido Herzfeld. The reason for this is that the cast list in the original script has the name Herzfeld added in handwriting for this role. These handwritten names are however only suggested names written before filming began. Most of the suggested actors appear in those roles, but there are differences too.

Taking a further look at pictures of von Winterstein and Herzfeld's appearance in another film, I'm now convinced that the actor in the interior scenes are indeed Eduard von Winterstein.

His real name was Eduard von Wangenheim and he was the father of Gustav von Wangenheim who played Hutter. So this scene is father and son acting together.

Here's an ad for a screening in Magdeburg of Die zwölfte Stunde where Eduard von Winterstein is mentioned among the cast (Volksstimme November 18 1931):

For comparison here's a couple of images of Guido Herzfeld from Murnau's 1924 Die Finanzen des Großherzogs (Finances of the Grand Duke), with Herzfeld in the role of Semjon Marcowitz.

I haven't been able to spot Herzfeld in any other Nosferatu role and I doubt he's in the film at all. Actually there's nothing that connects him to the film other than that cast list suggestion, and the subsequent repeated mention of his name in books since the 1960's.
