Not Pinocchio - but Buratino!

The story goes like this: Russian sci-fi writer Aleksey Tolstoy (distantly related to the more famous Tolstoy) read the story of Pinocchio as a child. He lost his copy so in 1936, he wrote his own version The Golden Key with a puppet named Buratino (after all, Pinocchio was himself based on a regular character in the Commedia del'Arte so there was no question of copyright). The Italian for wooden puppet is Burattino. You might be interested to know that a popular Russian soft drink is named Buratino - tastes a bit like Pepsi.

The book became an instant best-seller and the character of Buratino has remained in the hearts of Russian children ever since. A new movie is in the works with Russia's favourite actor Fedor Bondarchuk and little Vitaliya Kornienko as Buratino:

There are earlier versions of course - but none with the budget of the latest. The 1975 full film is available on Youtube with subtitles. Here's the trailer:
