A Christmas Carol (1938)
Scrooge is not only a beloved character because underneath it all, many of us can identify with his initial rejection of the expected, seasonal Christmas cheer, but also because we delight on his meanness and comeuppance. But the character needs room to breathe, room which is not provided in this version of the Charles Dickens’ story. Much too short and sped thru to be completely effective, it’s still difficult to ruin the classic tale.
Other than that, the actor cast to play Bob Cratchit looks sufficiently overfed to convince audiences he is suffering much; and the terrible script decision to have him purchase the full Christmas dinner basically undercuts Scrooge’s grand gesture of getting the Cratchit’s that fat turkey the film concludes on.
With Reginald Owen, Gene Lockhart, and Kathleen Lockhart.
