OK. So, Douglass Menville wrote a thesis waaaay back in 1959 which he published years later as "A Historical and Critical Survey of the Science Fiction Film".
In the original manuscript, he mentions a couple of times a 1958 film called "R.U.R." ("Rossum's Universal Robots" by Karel Capek) which he stated was Italian.
Later when the thesis was sold in book form, he corrected this and stated that the film was never actually made.
I'm just wondering where he might have gotten this info to begin with. Does anyone, by any chance, have an idea? Forry maybe? (I don't have any Famous Monsters). Somewhere else?
Yeah, sure... I'm writing a book on the worldwide performances of R.U.R. but my cutoff date is 1950. So, technically I don't need to mention this as much more than an aside. Still, I'm curious. I wonder how far the plans went? Who was involved? etc.
As a final note, Menville needs some recognition. He was one of the first to start making checklists of fantastika. Kudos from me to him.
