A cold-hearted, chainsmoking, middle-age scumbag makes his living prowling the craggier areas of LA at night with his movie camera, hoping to film random acts of violence in progress so he can sell the footage to a slimy local news agency. By chance, he discovers that there's cannibals living in the subterrain beneath Skid Row, and he sets about breaking the story. Along the way, he finds that the cannibals are simply creatures living by nature's design...they love, they mate, they protect and nurture their young. He comes to undestand that HE is the real monster.
The microcosm of digitally filmed movies is one I tend to avoid. Every so often, though, one pops up that gets some chirps of approval from reliable sources. THE GHOULS is one of those exceptions to the rule. CHAD FERRIN shot the film guerilla style with a budget under $15,000. The upshot may not make any "all time great" lists, but beneath the grubby presentation is an excessively brutal film with quite a bit of pointed social commentary, and a great performance from lead TIMOTHY MUSKATELL as one of the most loathsome protagonists ever.

It may be one of the best films of its type, and it's an authorized Youtube freebie. Check it out.
