In the classic introductory words on the splash page, "To the vermin of the underworld, he is The Spectre, an earthbound Ghost who punishes evil with a fearsome vengeance from beyond the grave."
And so he was from the very beginning when detective Jim Corrigan was brutally murdered, only to rise from the grave to mete out supernatural vengeance.
Although Gardner Fox and Neal Adams focused more on the magical aspects, it was writer Michael Fleisher who brought The Spectre back to his horror roots.
That was seen in Adventure Comics #440, in the story, "The Second Death of the Spectre." Drawn by Jim Aparo, the splash page depicted a grave from whose soil a human hand suddenly breaks to the surface. Classic zombie-type scene if I ever saw one.
