Horror Fiction • Halloween 2024 Readers' Corner

With a couple of days before October 1, I'm carving another space in the CHFB jack o' lantern for those of us who'll be spending some time on Halloween holiday reading.  Doesn't matter if you're clawing your way through some chunky Stephen King or you're finding meaning in the pictogram assembly instructions from Ikea for your new guillotine, portcullis or moat.  Drop on by, pull up an overstuffed wingback by the fire and let us know what writing's getting you in the spirit.  For reference, here are the past years' threads (great places to go if you're looking for some recommendations - we've had it all, from the loftiest lit to the schlockiest schlock):

As for me, I'm getting a late start, usually by end of September I'm already warming up with a few genre books to get me going.  Just one recent one to report out on:

The Orchard by Charles L. Grant (1986) - First time for me reading a work by the fairly prolific and popular Grant, it's moody as heck, not sure why we haven't crossed paths before, at least in novel form.  The book consists of four loosely connected sections about spooky borderlands encounters with people who've passed through the sinister orchard of Oxrun Station.  Each segment has some great tension in the buildup, but a couple of the payoffs fall a bit flat.  I'll definitely be going back to the Grant bibliography though, he's got a way with words, he's defiantly ambiguous and this one definitely kickstarted the October juices. 

I'll be a bit sporadic the first part of the month, some real-life stuff going on that's going to dent the reading time, but I'm also loaded up with a bunch of audiobooks in the queue for the driving and roaming about that will be keeping me from the printed page.  I'm excited to get going again and to hear what everyone's perusing.
