EVIL DEAD 2

Evil Dead 2: Tales of the Ex-Mortis, Vol. 1
By Justin Peniston, Frank Hannah, Georgia Ball, Ivan Cohen, Jeff Mariotte, Marsheila Rockwell, and various other artists

"Legend has it it was written by the dark ones. Necronomicon Ex Mortis. Roughly translated - Book of the dead. The book served as a passageway to the evil worlds beyond. It was written long ago, when the seas ran red of blood. It was this blood that was used to ink the book. In the year 1300 AD, the book disappeared." - Professor Raymond Knowby

The Necronomicon Ex-Mortis introduces this Ash-less series of stories of it's evil exploits across time in this collection. In "Soul Power" a young college student pines for a beautiful female cohort and Professor Knowby sets him up with a meeting with the woman who taught him about the evil book and how he can use it to win her heart. And if you think anything good can come from this then this story pretty much sets the stage for the horrors it really brings into the world.

The second story takes place in ancient Sumaria where a young man prepares himself to be sacrificed to the evil force that controls the prosperity of the land. Instead he comes face to face with the evil force and has a realization about his own faith.

Another story is about a young professor confined to a wheelchair by an accident who uses the book's power to try and give him back the use of his legs.

(He may be dressed like Ash for some reason, but it's someone else entirely.)

This story comes to a very confusing ending so I found it was just best to move on.

Other stories involve a summer camp terrorized by deadites and then a time warp to more deadite action in the Old West. Then there's a gratifying story of the ancient evil resurrected to serve the Third Reich, but no one controls the Army of Darkness. The final story is the prequel to Evil Dead II (1987) with a different looking Professor Knowby from his Dick Cheney look in the first story having unleashed the evil from his cabin in the woods and having to deal with his possessed wife Henrietta. This winds up being the best story because of it's connection to the actual film.

Without Ash Williams this series of stories is horrifying at times and tedious at others, but isn't all that much fun. Luckily the following volumes amp up the wackiness as they just expand on the second film, with Army of Darkness being it's own separate title.
