Universal Horrors • Universal's lack of consistent continuity

Since the simplest answers are often (but not always) the correct ones, would you agree that the reason Universal's writers and directors didn't care much about the kind of strict canonicity seen today is just because audiences didn't expect or need it?

The Mummy movies are probably the longest stretch with the tightest through-line, but they aren't even close to the episodic nature of actual serials. The Kharis films preserved a few key themes, events, tropes, and a few characters, but were free to loosen up on anything else.

The result is a collection of alternate realities: similar or even the same in many respects but very different in a few others. That's why everything not a direct sequel (BoF and, I guess, Dracula's Daughter, maybe HoD)...forget it, there is no real consistency.
