Toys and Collectibles • Curious discrepancies in Aurora boxart likenesses

James Bama did fantastic work with the Dracula boxart since we've all seen the Lugosi publicity photo he used as the basis. It's the best of the twelve, actor-likeness-wise.

Any of the artists Aurora hired could have nailed any monster likeness they chose to. But often they chose not to. Some, like Godzilla, a little on the generic side was probably seen as "good enough." But others could have been done like the Dracula art.

If I'd met Bama and could ask one question, I would inquire why he didn't go with more of a Karloff likeness for the first kit's artwork, as he'd clearly modeled Dracula on Lugosi.

As much as I always liked the strikingly yellow lit Monster stalking out of that deep violet/blue background, it's generic. It makes no strong attempt to resemble any single Universal Monster (Strange, if anyone) and definitely isn't based on the kit.

I'll still die happy not knowing the answer but you gotta admit, it is an odd discrepancy.
