The popular manga (more than twenty million copies sold) was first an anime TV series and now a live-action movie that will knock your socks off. A kamui, by the way, is the spiritual force that drives our hero to be, well, a hero. A veteran of the Russo-Japanese War of 1904, he seeks a treasure with the help of an Ainu girl who saved his life. For those who don't know, the Ainu were the aboriginal inhabitants of Japan. To find the treasure, they must bring together a group of ex-prisoners who had the treasure map tattooed across their backs in parts.
The series has proved so popular in Japan, it has been credited with an act of parliament that improved the land rights of the remaining Ainu.
Anna Yamada who plays Ainu woman Asirpa is an accomplished actress - I could spend all day discussing some of the shows she has appeared in - but I'll stick to one. In Shin Shincho Koki / Born Again (2022), she plays an advanced high school student (Miyabi) transferred to a special class where she discovers her classmates are all clones of famous historical people - who is doing this and why? And what about Miyabi - is she also a clone?
