I'm not sure I have an answer myself, though the one that's the most fun is Jim Steanko's 2-volume HISTORY OF THE COMICS.
Subject matter could include just comic strips, just comic books, or both combined. Actually, I don't think anyone's ever attempted a history tracing the concurrent histories of these two sub-departments of the comics medium. Usually either you have a comic strip history that makes brief mention of comic books (like Steranko's) or a comic book history that charts the influence of the strips on the magazine industry.
