Just showed up a day or so ago on Tubi, so I thought I would give it a watch to see what they did to one of my favorite horror films. I was very excited to see it… boy, was I in for a shock!
The directors cut is a travesty! It destroys those gripping, visceral “cell” scenes, arguably, the best parts of the film. Jadon millers addition is crucial to the film since the “Gemini” demon supposedly entered his body 15 years earlier. So for the demon to manifest itself in both forms ads tremendous depth to the scenes and plot. Not to mention that so impressively immersive soundscape missing from those scenes as well ( the eerie, deep howling and growling, completely missing , complimenting Dourifs performance to the extent it grabs you and never lets go). The addition of the opening prologue was confusing and useless. And that let down, rather unexpectedly “Soprano-esque” ending was truly a crime! The addition of an exorcism ending was much more engaging . I cannot recommend the directors cut to even the most die hard Exorcist III fan. It’s like drinking a Coke with all the fizz gone, or milk past its expiration date …. Just don’t do it!!!
