"Expect the Unexpectable!" screams the poster for Who Killed Captain Alex? one of the first movies made by Uganda's Isaac Nabwana, often described as the country's Quentin Tarantino.
That may be aiming too high but comparisons to Lloyd Kaufman are probably not too amiss as Isaac churns out action-packed movies with a hint of comedy, the occasional ray gun and goodness knows what else from his Wakaliwood studios. Nine million have so far seen Captain Alex on Youtube - a sequel is planned.

Isaac didn't make his first film until he was thirty-two. Eighteen years later, he has more than twenty under his belt and counting. Slowly, the films have become more sophisticated. Crazy World - about a former soldier (soja) who goes insane when his child is kidnapped and sets out to seek revenge - even makes a valid social comment amidst the mayhem, slaughter, martial art and comedy.
Isaac admits to being a little crazy himself having been chased through the savannah by an American-made combat helicopter during the bush war as a child - an image featured on the poster for Who Killed Captain Alex. Slowly, Isaac's crazy movies are heading mainstream, being picked up by streaming services such as YoTV and penetrating festivals on the fringes worldwide with the help of New York's Alan Hofmanis.
Forced to choose a favourite, I would go for Kung Fu Brothers (2020), a Chinese martial arts movie set in Kampala.
There's more to come - Wakaliwood currently has eight movies in production with many more ideas scribbled on a crowded sheet of notepaper in Isaac's backpocket. Stand by for Action!
