This week marks the birthdays of two of my favorite character actors from the "olde days." Forrester Harvey was born in Cork, Ireland, on June 27, 1884 - one hundred forty years ago today. William V. Mong was born in Chambersburg, Pennsylvania, on June 25, 1875 - one hundred forty-nine years ago. Both were colorful character actors. Mong's career goes way back into the silents where most of his early work was for Selig as a director, scenario writer and an actor. In the early sound era, he was often cast as a villain or a miserly old man. He appeared in Benjamin Christensen's trilogy of haunted house thrillers (THE HAUNTED HOUSE, SEVEN FOOTPRINTS TO SATAN and HOUSE OF HORROR). A very underrated actor. Harvey is best known for his lending comic relief to horror classics like THE INVISIBLE MAN, THE MYSTERY OF EDWIN DROOD (borderline genre) and THE WOLFMAN.
