Nothing to do with the James Wan franchise but a Russian movie released this week. In a curious twist, the movie is set in an Anglo world - much like those German krimi from the sixties that were set in London.
Detective Paul returns to his hometown after many years, broken after his son has fallen into an endless coma. Paul takes on the investigation of the brutal murder of a teenager in an old estate. The case painfully reminds him of a terrible incident that happened to him and his friends in his youth. An ominous entity lurks within the walls of this house; meeting it threatens inevitable death. An old phonograph, capturing the frightening whisper of a witch, opens a gate to the other world and starts a chain of deaths. However, a written spell has healing properties and even brings the dead back to life. Paul faces a difficult choice: save old friends from Evil or take the sinister phonograph, make a deal with evil spirits and bring his little son out of a coma.
The film features Maryana Spivak who was also in the excellent Baba Yaga: Terror of the Dark Forest (2020) - what do you do if your new stepmother is the blackest most-evil witch who every lived?
