I thought it might be worth mentioning this Belgian TV series that has turned into a phenomenon. Quite rightly, the series is aimed at children who benefit from being so scared they have to hide behind the sofa (I'm thinking here of my first introduction to Daleks) - but there's much here for adults to admire too.
"The series is about the 'Night Watch', a supernatural trio (Vladimir, Wilko and Keelin) with magical powers, and their magical counselor Vega. They all live in the village of Schemermeer (Shadowlake in English), which is also a portal from which creatures from the underworld often emerge, usually in human form. Schemermeer is located very secluded on the edge of a large forest. Time has seemingly stood still. The village center looks medieval (there is a blacksmith in the village), and there is never any reference to other villages or towns. Yet several characters have a car and a smartphone. In each episode, the three heroes battle a new evil creature."
The series has so far spawned five seasons, three movies, books, comic books and even a couple of stage plays. There's no sign of it ending - nor of those nasty beasties keeping their side of the shadow line - thank goodness for that.
The series stars Louis Thyssen, Giovanni Kemper and Celine Verbeeck
