Inside Famous Monsters #64 were several pages showing a werewolf makeup being applied in stages on set to comedian Pat Paulsen for a skit to be aired on The Smothers Brothers Comedy Hour.

The caption for the last photo reads “And here he is, claws ‘n’ all: ‘Hairy’ Paulsen as you would have seen him on TV if that particular Smothers Bros. show had been shown.”

The caption suggests this is from the episode that was originally supposed to air on April 13, 1969 but was never shown because the Smothers Brothers did not deliver it in time for the network censors to view it before broadcast. The episode would eventually be shown on the E! Entertainment Network in 1993 introduced by Smothers Brothers. That broadcast is on YouTube but I don’t think the werewolf clip is included — if it was actually a part if that episode (the uncut episode is apparently included in the Season 3 ‘best of’ compilation released on DVD in 2008 or 2009). The problem is that I vaguely recall seeing the werewolf clip when I was a kid. I recall it being very, very brief. But I also admit this could be a false memory.

Digging around some more I found these photos showing an uncredited Verne Langdon along with another fellow applying the werewolf makeup to Pat Paulsen in a studio makeup department. But this is the caption for each: “LOS ANGELES - JANUARY 6: Pictured is Pat Paulsen in makeup for a role as a werewolf in The Maltese Bippy, a theatrical movie. Image dated January 6, 1969.” The photo is credited to CBS.

Now of course the makeup is not from THE MALTESE BIPPY, which was an MGM production. The werewolf makeup for THE MALTESE BIPPY was completely different and applied by Bill Tuttle. And Pat Paulsen is not in that movie. The Smothers Brothers Comedy Hour aired on CBS, the source for these photos. If you compare these makeup studio photos to the spread from FM, the makeup artist with the wavy, wiry hair appears to be the same fellow in both. My guess is the blond fellow in FM whose face we don’t see is likely Verne Langdon. The makeup studio photos may be from a test session for the makeup that would be applied on set. But I wonder if the January 6, 1969 date is correct. Did FM make an error and the werewolf skit appeared in an earlier episode that actually aired? Or did Verne Langdon & friend test the makeup for the TV episode that far in advance for an episode that did not air because the Smothers Brothers didn’t get it in time to CBS for review? I assume that FM got their photos directly from Langdon who turned up in their pages for years and that he is likely the source for the info that the werewolf skit was from the unaired episode. He would’ve know.

I love how similar the werewolf makeup is to the Don Post Wolf Man mask (except for the ears). Langdon was a partner with Don Post Studios when those movie monster “calendar masks” were produced. But also note how the studio makeup is comprised of more facial appliances than the on-set makeup that relies a bit more on greasepaint.
