Strangely, today is Dracula Day (Bram's novel is believed to have been published on May 26th, 1897) and also Ginger Day (or if you prefer: Red-Haired, Titian-haired, Auburn, Chestnut Day)
Red-Haired people have the MC1R gene. There are 140million worldwide. Currently, Scotland and Ireland have the highest percentage (12% of their population) - sometimes called the Celtic fringe, though their origins lie within the Samoyed peoples of northern Russia who migrated through Scandinavia and invaded Scotland/Ireland as part of the Viking incursion.
Vampires may have their origins in a mutation of the CLPX gene which can cause proto-porphyria, a group of diseases that lead to anaemia, pale skins, a hatred of sunlight etc. In times past, this may have led to a fear of afflicted people.
In a sense, both redheads and vampires are mutants. My wife is a redhead and there's definitely something strange about her :>
Today is a day of double celebration for red-headed vampires so here's a question - who is your favourite red-headed vampire (or Dracula) from the movies? I think I would go for Verlaine (Marit Velle Kile)
