Foreign Horror • The country with no horror movies

Nearly every country in the world boasts at least one horror movie. Russia has VIY, Poland had LOKIS and I LIKE BATS, and Czechoslovakia produced a bunch of interesting horror movies, including one about a vampire car (FERMAT VAMPIRE). Even North Korea has PULGASARI, which has to be seen to be believed. East Germany, on the other hand, in its 41 year history never made one horror movie. Weirdly, the closest they ever came to doing so was THE FLYING DUTCHMAN, a film adaptation of Richard Wagner's opera. Yep, you heard me right. It's still an opera, but the atmosphere of the film reminds me a lot of the old Universal movies. All black-and-white atmosphere. There is one scene where dead sailors go to the local pub and ask to be let in that comes close to a scene from NIGHT OF THE LIVING DEAD, but everybody is singing, so it doesn't have quite the same effect. Anyway, if you're curious and you aren't allergic to opera, you can find it on Kanopy. I also wrote about it on my East German Cinema Blog. I won't promote that here,. but you can find it easily enough.
