Horror Comics and Fantastic Art • The Phantasmagorical Fine Art of the Warren Horror Comics

I was spoiled. Or maybe I was ruined by the Warren horror comics.

I have no recollection of possessing any comic books until I was seven years old. And the first comic I recall owning was Warren’s Eerie #16. I can still remember finding it on a lower shelf at a Stars and Stripes newsstand inside the PX at then Ft. Gordon, Georgia. I picked it up, looked at the colorful but spooky cover and chased down my mom to show it to her. I probably was well aware that my birthday was only a few months away and I was sure she was, too. She looked at it and placed it in the shopping cart. In truth, my mom operated under the philosophy that while it was appropriate to turn down a request for a toy, she never turned down a request for a book, though I didn’t realize that until decades later. Nevertheless, as I earned some pocket money I spent a good portion of it on monster magazines and comics and other books that interested me.

But after looking at the contents of Eerie #16 how could Marvel, DC, Gold Key, Harvey and the rest of the Code approved comics ever stand a chance? Sure, I bought them fairly regularly but they were more like place holders until I could find another copy of the “real thing.”

To this day, holding a vintage Creepy, Eerie or Vampirella magazine is more than nostalgia to me. The artwork inside comes close to evoking the same response that film does and it became even more captivating as I grow older.

This thread is for celebrating the artwork of Warren’s horror comics Creepy, Eerie, and Vampirella.
