The festival in the small Baltic republic of Estonia kicks off this weekend, hosted as always by Dr Frankenstein - aka Helmut Jänes. How many knew, by the way, that Skype was largely developed in Estonia?
Estonians (like the Finns) are known for their surreal sense of humour and centre stage this year is the Estonian musical horror Chainsaws Were Singing (2024), ten years in the making on a budget that includes negative numbers. Apparently, there were lots of cuts in the editing room.

Chainsaws Were Singing
"I have no doubt that this film has a future. It will probably soon be seen at notable genre film festivals," Helmut said.
The highlight of the festival is the extraordinary Stopmotion (2023) discussed competently elsewhere on CHFB - but it's worth seeing the trailer again - it's just so good:
Other notable films at the festival include Italian gore fest The Well (2023) Famke Janssen's OTT action starrer Boy Kills World (2024), Vietnam's anthropomorphic porcine Crimson Snout (2023), the so-bad-its-good Winnie the Pooh: Blood and Honey 2 (2024), lots more and a retro section of banned Nordic movies. How can you afford not to attend?
"At the very least, I would like to hope that our line-up doesn’t include any films that are so bad there is nothing but negative things to say about them," Helmut added. "And if that’s the case, I hope it’s more that they’re “so bad they’re good."
