TV Terrors • The Devil (2023)

This slow-burn K-Drama (also known as Revenant) is popping all the corks at festivals - including the New York Festival TV & Film Awards.

The series stars Kim Tae-ri as a depressed young woman seeking to recover from the death of her father whilst struggling to complete at night school the onerous workload expected of students who want to become public officials. After receiving a relic from her dead father mysterious deaths take place around her, and she finds herself slowly changing.

A big hit in Korea, the reviews have bordered on ecstatic: "I waited almost every week for another 2 episodes because the series was very intriguing. The characters were all smart and open minded, and also learnt from their mistakes. This what made the show different from any other horror/thriller movie, where most of the characters were looked so panic and clueless when it came the time to face the devil."

As the lead character is slowly possessed by a demonic presence, she is challenged by a folklore specialist who saw his own mother destroyed by a demon. He realises that the same demon he has pledged to destroy is the one in possession of the heroine.

As an aside, I discovered this is available in the UK on a pre-loaded USB stick. Is this set to replace DVD as a medium? I have no idea. I struggle with technology. I don't even possess a smartphone. I'm still struggling to master the typewriter and the fountain pen.
