Over in the "repurposing" thread, this exchange was raised:

!?!
taying tuned.
Since that thread promptly drifted away from that exchange to discuss YouTube videos-- and will likely be padlocked and pushpinned soon-- I'm continuing here.

I don't know a lot of details, not having access to the full comics, but in ALL-WINNERS #1 (Summer 1941):

Cap and Bucky faced off against zombies-- created by "The Lord of Death" from homeless men living on the bowery:

zombies who want to--

They wreak havoc on the local population:

until Cap and Bucky take them out:

These were not your traditional Haitian zombies, however, but the product of a gruesome, Mengele-like laboratory preying on desperate men:

And, of course, it's all in the service of Der Fuehrer-- until Cap and Bucky foil his plans-- "und say 'Heil!' right in Der Fuehrer's face" :

While these stories "fudge" a little by presenting them as non-traditional, Kirby and Simon make them just as horrifying as anything turned out in actual horror comics-- and to some extent, maybe even worse, given the awareness a contemporary reader would've had with what the real-life "bad guys" were doing to people.

I don't have a good access to the actual stories, but these were covered by a satirical website, "Mr. Kitty's" STUPID COMICS-- which gives an MST3K spin to various types of comics and comics-related media.

More panels and his humorous take on things can be found here:

A note of caution-- serious comics scholars and purists may find "Mr. Kitty's" approach offensive-- and once before when I posted about it here, someone totally dissed the site as being "like something written by a 12-year-old."
