A young boy with crutches hears the tenement building which
lamed him in a fire taunting him that it will never be destroyed--
I'll still be here after you are dead and gone" and the "bedbugs
and cockroaches" will "crawl all over" him.
The voice is only in his mind. . .or is it? There is a flashback
to how the building killed earlier tenants with Cholera in the previous century.
The kid vows "I will get you" and he burns it down
but dies, apparently by choice, in the conflagration.
The film is not genre save these bizarre mental dialogues
with the building but several of the stars have
strong genre connections. The main actor
fourteen years later will be an assassin controlled
by aliens. The main actress will be pivotal many, many
decades later in indirectly foiling yet another alien invasion.
And the crippled kid will later, from behind the scenes,
lead a motley crew in another New York-ish fantasy
inspired by perhaps the most beloved fantasy film of all time.
